Ecological Reserve Cotacachi – Cayapas with a spectacular dormant volcano.
In the Ecuadorian highlands there is one of the most important protected areas, which conteins various types of ecosystems, pajonales spattered flowers, the domain of the condor, wind and cold. The reserve is steep foothills with lots of orchids that grow on the trees of the cloud forest.
Cotacachi – Cayapas, it name gives us an idea of the many different climates that are contained in this reserve and protected area from the rocky and snowy Summits :

Altitudinal range: 35 – 4939 meters
Vegetation type: Tropical rain forests in the lower banks of the Cayapas river and mountain forests of the Pacific slope lands.
Flora: more than 2000 species of vascular plants in the buffer zone.
Fauna: harpy eagle, Northern peacock, the green macaw, multicolored bull, pechirrojo mielero and whiskered tanager
Cotacachi volcano
This volcano has always been the challenge of mountain climbers and chroniclers themselves and outsiders. Of what is remembered by the certainty of its source, part of the French Geodesic Mission, headed by La Condamine, came to place a sign on the «mountain of Cotacache» incredible but true!
