
Antizana Sunset
It is located in the Eastern Cordillera in the Napo and Pichincha province of Ecuador, is one of the ten «hot spots» ( hot spots ) around the world for being incorporated in the basin of the Napo River. Its main attraction is the volcano that gives it its name and adjoins national parks Cayambe Coca and Sumaco Napo Galeras. This reserve is the main home of the Andean condor . In addition, the reserve is part of Project Condor Bioreserve initiative put forward by The Nature Conservancy ( TNC) , which aims to achieve integrated five protected areas of conservation Ecuador .
Creation : 21 st. July 1993
Extension: 120 000 hectares
Ecosystems : lower montane evergreen forest , montane forest mist , tall evergreen montane forest , grassy moor, heath pads and upper montane grassland lake , as well as numerous wetlands. Altitude:1 200 – 5,758 m.
Climate: between 3-17 degrees.
Flora: pads, Chuquiragua ( Chuquiraga sp. ) , Associations of mosses, orchids and remnants of Polylepis (Tree Paper or Pantza ) and Pumamaqui ( Oreopanax sp. ) , Plus extensive scrublands , herbaceous and shrub vegetation of low height.
FAUNA: 552 vertebrate species , 481 of birds, mammals and 61 73 and 42 reptiles amphibians .
ANTISANA VOLCANO
It is the fourth highest volcano in Ecuador ( 5758 m ), is covered by perpetual glaciers. It has two volcanic buildings : the Antisana I , it is an old and eroded building is located in the eastern part of the complex, and Antisana II represents the potentially active young building. It is one of the volcanoes with more complexity for obtaining permits because only the guides know the route.
Type: Potentially active stratovolcano
Last eruption: 1590-1600.
Ascent:To make the summit of the volcano , it is necessary to do a specialized high mountain guide.
How do we get there?: To reach Antisana Reserve there are two ways . The first is by the Quito – Pintag way in which you need to walk 25 Km until you reach the Reserve and reach the lagoon Mica, famous for its sport fishing. The other access is by the Quito -Baeza road with which you reach the eastern part of the reserve is accessed from this three secondary roads. If using private transport is recommended riding in a car with four-wheel drive (4 × 4).
